“I love realistic space movies … I’m definitely a nerd,” reads Chris Birch’s answer on her profile page. That response proved prescient: shortly after stepping away from her professional cycling career, the Arizona native was selected from more than 12,000 applicants to join NASA’s astronaut class of 2021. The further she progressed with her application to join NASA, the more convinced she became that she had a future in spaceflight. “I really just had a blast,” Birch tells CNN Sport. “I absolutely would love to explore off this planet,” says Birch.

CNN —Ukrainian forces would have to cede further territory to Russia if US military aid does not arrive soon, President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned, in his latest appeal to Congress to pass a multibillion-dollar package. President Joe Biden’s administration is struggling to push a $95 billion international aid package – which includes $60 billion for Ukraine – through the House of Representatives more than month since it was passed in the Senate. Zelensky warned that the lack of aid was urgent, and could endanger Ukraine’s major cities. Meanwhile, Zelensky said, Ukraine is scrambling “to find some way not to retreat.”The goal for Ukraine so far is to keep the frontline situation stable, according to Zelensky. “If the front remains stable, Ukraine can arm and train new brigades in the rear to conduct a new counteroffensive later this year,” he said.

The details below have been compiled from comments by freed hostages to their families, their carers and sometimes to reporters. Under the terms of the deal between Israel and Hamas, most of those released are women, children and foreign workers. Ruth Munder, a released Israeli hostage, walks with an Israeli soldier shortly after her arrival in Israel on November 24. Emily Hand told her father that they always had breakfast and sometimes lunch or an evening meal. Emily Hand said she was not hit and her father said he believed harsh voices were enough to make her do what was wanted.

EU is ill-equipped to meet growing global threats

The snag is that EU countries are ever more reluctant to give up their right to block collective actions. Meanwhile, rivalry between the United States and China – and a green subsidy race between the world's two largest economies – is undermining the world trading system. The response of EU countries to the Gaza conflict has also been shambolic, both individually and collectively. Yet EU countries are also grappling with nationalistic currents, the latest demonstration of which is last week’s election victory by Geert Wilders, the Dutch politician who has long campaigned on an anti-immigrant and anti-EU ticket. But it is not clear that EU countries want to find a way to speed up collective decision-making.

HONG KONG (AP) — Shoppers in China have been tightening their purse strings, raising questions over how faltering consumer confidence may affect Saturday's annual Singles’ Day online retail extravaganza. Singles Day, also known as “Double 11,” was popularized by e-commerce giant Alibaba. Shoppers spent $38 billion in 24 hours on Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms during Singles’ Day in 2019. “The hype and excitement around Singles’ Day is sort of over," said Shaun Rein, founder and managing director of Shanghai-based China Market Research Group. “I just feel that people don’t spend as much as before, possibly because they don’t have much to spend,” she said.

But the West Virginia senator’s Thursday announcement that he won’t seek reelection next year only refreshed a perennial question arising from his savvy instinct for accumulating power: What exactly is he up to? Second, the announcement immediately stoked speculation that Manchin is mulling a third-party presidential bid. Manchin’s decision to quit Washington comes as a formidable potential Republican challenger, West Virginia Gov. And if Manchin can’t win in the MAGA stronghold of West Virginia, it’s impossible to believe any other Democrat can. West Virginia was once a Democratic bastion, however.

A trader works on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 27, 2023. A worrying late-year stock market unwind is starkest in small-cap indexes (.RUT) now tracking year-to-date losses of some 7% - even as the benchmark S&P500 (.SPX) remains up 7% and Big Tech leaders of the Nasdaq 100 are still 30% (.NDX) higher. Annual earnings growth for S&P500 companies is now expected to have picked up to a 4.3% annual growth rate, according to LSEG estimates, from as low as 1.6% before the reporting season began. But beyond Fed policy rates, it's the restive bond market and near 16-year-high long-term borrowing costs that are starting to hurt most. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields held steady at 4.85% - well below the 5% threshold they breached last week.

With digital therapeutics' trailblazers in jeopardy, experts think more failures are on the horizon. Covering digital therapeutics hasn't been easyInsurers, the ultimate gatekeepers in healthcare, have been slow to warm to the idea of reimbursing prescription digital therapeutics. Plus, most digital therapeutics don't integrate with electronic-health-records systems, making it difficult for clinicians to track their patients' progress. [1/2] General view of Saudi Aramco's Ras Tanura oil refinery and oil terminal in Saudi Arabia May 21, 2018. Both contracts extended gains of more than 2% on Friday after the Saudi energy ministry said the kingdom's output would drop to 9 million bpd in July from about 10 million bpd in May. Consultancy Rystad Energy said the additional Saudi cut is likely to deepen the market deficit to more than 3 million bpd in July, which could push prices higher in the coming weeks. "The immediate market impact of this Saudi cut is likely lower, as drawing inventories takes time, and the market likely already put some meaningful probability on a cut today," the bank's analysts added. In contrast, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was allowed to raise output targets by 200,000 bpd to 3.22 million bpd to reflect its larger production capacity.

Gold flat as focus shifts to inflation data

Gold jewelry at a store ahead of the festival of Diwali in New Delhi, India on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022. Gold prices were flat during early Asian hours on Friday, as traders awaited economic data due later in the day to gauge the Federal Reserve's rate hike stance. Investors' attention turns to personal consumption expenditure (PCE) data due at 1330 GMT, for cues on inflation. Although gold is considered an inflation hedge, rising interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding bullion since it pays no interest. Britain's economy contracted more than first thought in the third quarter of this year, data showed on Thursday.
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile toward its eastern waters on Thursday, South Korea’s military said, hours after the North threatened to launch “fiercer” military responses to the U.S. bolstering its security commitment to its allies South Korea and Japan. It said South Korea has strengthened its surveillance of North Korea while maintaining military readiness in close coordination with the United States. It was North Korea’s first ballistic missile firing in eight days and the latest in its barrage of tests in recent months. North Korea previously said some of the tests were simulations of nuclear attacks on South Korean and U.S. targets. Many experts say North Korea would eventually want to enhance its nuclear capability to wrest bigger concessions from its rivals.
SEOUL, Nov 17 (Reuters) - North Korea warned on Thursday of "fiercer military responses" to U.S. efforts to boost its security presence in the region with its allies, state media said, saying Washington is taking a "gamble it will regret". North Korea's foreign minister, Choe Son Hui, slammed a recent trilateral summit between the United States, South Korea and Japan, during which the leaders criticised Pyongyang's weapons tests and pledged greater security cooperation. On Thursday, the South Korean military reported another ballistic missile launch off North Korea's east coast. She referred to her country by the initials of its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The United States has been saying since May that North Korea is preparing to conduct its first nuclear test since 2017, but its actual timing remains unclear.
SEOUL, Nov 17 (Reuters) - North Korea fired a ballistic missile on Thursday as it warned of "fiercer military responses" to U.S. efforts to boost its security presence in the region with its allies, saying Washington is taking a "gamble it will regret". South Korea's military said the ballistic missile was launched from the North's east coast city of Wonsan at 10:48 a.m. (0248 GMT). The United States has been saying since May that North Korea is preparing to conduct its first nuclear test since 2017, but its actual timing remains unclear. South Korea's Unification Minister Kwon Young-se, who handles intra-Korea affairs, said the North might postpone its nuclear test for some time, citing China's domestic political schedule. "North Korea has also achieved some political effects by codifying its nuclear law in August, so it might not have immediate needs for a nuclear test," Kwon said in an interview with Yonhap news agency released on Thursday.
New York CNN Business —Coffee futures are crashing. “When the dollar goes up, everything measured in dollars, like international coffee prices, tend to go down,” Mera said. In the year through October, not adjusted for seasonal swings, coffee prices jumped 14.8% in the grocery store, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But the improved conditions won’t necessarily mean a big decline in coffee prices for consumers, Mera noted. That’s because while coffee prices are falling, other costs, like labor and distribution, are still high for producers.
We asked four of the financial advisors who made CNBC's FA 100 list in 2022 what they're hearing from their older clients and how they're responding. 1 on CNBC's FA 100 list. A new concern, Harlemert said, is the impact rising interest rates are having on people's pensions. The value of a pension is based, in part, on current interest rates, he explained. For the last 10 years, he said, they've seen their pensions mostly rise in value as interest rates have remained at historic lows.
Founder Chris Krolow runs a marketplace for buying, selling, and renting private islands. More than 20 years later, Krolow is now an island expert and the owner and operator of Private Islands Inc., a marketplace for renting and selling islands around the world. From tour guide to island salesmanSapodilla Private Island, one of the properties Krolow owns with his business partner, David Keener. He'd stumbled on a smart formula: Marketing a private island individually is expensive, as the audience for rentals or sales is small and dispersed. People aren't just crazy about renting islands, but they'll pay a premium to own one," he said.
